How to Sync Notes between iPad and Mac using Cloud Storages

Outline is a perfect app to take notes on both your iPad and Mac. Take a minute to learn how to keep them in sync via Dropbox / Box or OneDrive.

Scenario 1 – There are no notebooks yet

In this case create a notebook in Outline on iPad or Mac and proceed to the relevant scenario below.



Scenario 2 – There are notebooks on iPad

      1. Create a Dropbox / Box account if you don't have it yet. Install Dropbox client to your iPad
      and Mac.

      2. In Outline on iPad go to Settings > Synchronization > Dropbox / Box > Link. Enter
      your credentials
.

​      3. On the homescreen long tap on your notebook's cover, choose Properties > Location >
      Dropbox, Box or iCloud > Choose folder (optionally) > Done.

      4. In Outline on Mac click “+” next to NOTEBOOKS in the navigation tree (on the left), choose
      Open from Local, Dropbox or Box / Open from iCloud > Choose your notebook. You
      can also simply drag&drop your notebook folder into Outline from Finder.



Scenario 3 – There are notebooks on Mac

      1. Create a Dropbox / Box account if you don't have it yet. Install Dropbox client to your iPad
      and Mac.

      2. On your Mac find your local notebook folder: right-click on the notebook's cover >
      Properties.

      3. You can navigate to that folder manually or just click Show in Finder.

​      4. Copy&paste the folder of your notebook from your local folder into the Dropbox / Box or
      iCloud folder and then reopen your notebook with Outline for Mac from this new location to
      refresh the connection ("+" > Open from Local, Dropbox or Box / Open from iCloud).

      5. In Outline on iPad tap “+” on the homescreen and choose Open from > Dropbox /
      Box
 / iCloud > Enter your credentials > Choose your notebook.

Scenario 4 – There are notebooks in OneNote on PC

      1. Create a Dropbox / Box account if you don't have it yet. Install Dropbox, Box or iCloud
      client to your iPad, Mac and PC.

      2. On your PC move your notebook folder (cut&paste) into Dropbox / Box / iCloud folder and
      then reopen your notebook with OneNote for PC from this new location to refresh the
      connection.​

      3. In Outline on iPad tap “+” on the homescreen and choose Open from > Dropbox / Box
      / iCloud
> Enter your credentials > Choose your notebook.

      4. In Outline for Mac click “+” next to NOTEBOOKS in the navigation tree (on the left),
      choose Open from Local, Dropbox or Box / Open From iCloud > Choose your
      notebook. You can also simply drag&drop your notebook folder into Outline from Finder.

How to Sync Notes between iPad and Mac via OneDrive

Scenario 1 – There are no notebooks yet or there are notebooks on iPad

      1. Create OneDrive account if you don't have it yet.

      2. Create new notebook in your iPad Outline: tap the "+" next to NOTEBOOKS > Create
      Notebook
.

      3. In Outline on iPad go to Settings > Synchronization > OneDrive > Enter your
      credentials.

      4. Check if the notebook you want to move to OneDrive is in OneNote format (OneDrive only
      supports OneNote format notebooks): long tap on your notebook's cover, choose Properties
      > Format > OneNote.

      5. On the homescreen long tap on your notebook's cover, choose Properties > Location            > OneDrive > Choose folder (optionally) > Done.

      6. In Outline on Mac click “+” next to NOTEBOOKS in the navigation tree (on the left),
      choose Open from OneDrive > Choose your notebook. 

Scenario 2 – There are notebooks on Mac

      1. Create a OneDrive account if you don't have it yet.

      2. In OneDrive web client click “Create a OneNote notebook”, give it a title. 

      3. In Outline on Mac click “+” next to NOTEBOOKS in the navigation tree (on the left),
      choose Open from OneDrive > Choose your notebook.

      4. Move section tabs from your local notebook into the newly opened OneDrive notebook by
      drag&drop and sync changes.

      5. In Outline on iPad go to Settings > Synchronization > OneDrive > Enter your
      credentials.

      6. Tap “+” on the homescreen and choose Open from > OneDrive > Choose your
      notebook.

Scenario 3 – There are notebooks in OneNote on PC

      1. Create a OneDrive account if you don't have it yet.

      2. In OneNote on PC right-click on your notebook title in the list on the left, choose Share
      this notebook
> OneDrive.

      3. In Outline on Mac click “+” next to NOTEBOOKS in the navigation tree (on the left),
      choose Open from OneDrive > Choose your notebook.

      4. In Outline on iPad go to Settings > Synchronization > OneDrive > Enter your
      credentials.

      5. Tap “+” on the homescreen and choose Open from > OneDrive > Choose your
      notebook.



This being done you can edit your notes and keep them in real-time sync between your iPad and Mac. In case
