Export - Import

Greg Feb 19, 2016 06:18AM PST

I'm in the second day of using the Trial Version and wish to import OPML and RTF files. Is that possible? If so, how? If not, why? Also would like the capability to export to OPML and RTF. Same questions -- Is that possible? If so, how? If not, why? Thanks.

Hi Greg,

Right now it isn't possible to import/export OPML and RTF files. Thank you for bringing this up, I've noted your request for this feature and recorded your vote for it.

I agree with the other Greg. Export to RTF at a minimum is very much needed.

I am looking at using Outline+ as a replacement for the now defunct Circus Ponies Notebook (CPN). I think Outline+ may be even better and easier for my uses, but I need a tool to be able to migrate old notebooks that preserves the structure of the CPN file. An OPML import should do this, but RTF would help.

I tried the “Print to Outline” pdf option. This sort of takes a pdf on large snapshot of the CPN file, but as far as I can tell, it cannot be parsed or edited.

Thanks for your interest in Outline.

Very soon, you'll be able to use a special tool for importing your Circus Ponies notebooks into Outline. In fact, we just published a blog post about it, please check it out here

Let me know if you have questions.

The conversion script (Circus Ponies Notebook to Outline) has been released.

Thank you for your efforts. Unfortunately, it does not (yet) achieve the import as intended. The website (html) files are created but then nothing happen.

Looking forward to the next version and the fix.

Thank you for getting in touch to report this issue, we will look into this.

May I ask, which Outline for Mac version do you currently have installed? Please note that you need the latest version 3.8.1 for the tool to work properly.

What a disappointment. Outline looked good until I saw it can’t export to opml. An outline tool that can’t import/export opml? Having now lost Circus Ponies Notebook, I’m really concerned about being able to get my information OUT in a useful form.

This is almost a deal killer for me.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for reaching out!

I will add your voice for the opml export feature.
Do you want me to get back to you when we'll have any certain decision on its implementation?

And sure, feel free to write to me any other your questions / suggestion on Outline performance!

The same import / export questions have been asked as far back as 2014.

Now it is 2017, and still no import functions for a simple txt or rtf file. Are you sure this application was developed for use on a Mac? Does not seem like it was. Time to move on. I just can't wait around for years and years waiting for such a small function.

Hi Waldormar,

I'm sorry to hear that!

Did I get it right that you're talking about some special import option for TXT and RTF?
Are any difficulties with importing text to Outline?
You can add it as attachment or you can paste the text to work with it later in Outline.

At the moment we have special import features for Circus Ponies and Evernote only.
But we need it to recreate the notebook structure from different format.

Could you please describe me your overall workflow with using TXT, RTF files?
I think I'll be able to help.

We all need the ability to import txt, rtf, and rtfd files.

I have worked with two note taking / data base apps for years. I wanted to move all my files over to OUTLINE but as you know, we have no way of importing txt, rtf, and rtfd files.

If it where just a hand full of files I would just copy/paste. However when your talking about 100's and even a few thousand txt, rtf, and rtfd files copy/paste just does not work.

Thank you for information!

And you are right, if it's about a lot of text files, manual import can be difficult.
Do you know any apps that can make this import automatically?
I could use it as reference when discussing this feature suggestion with the dev team.

The two main apps that I have been using for the past 10 years is:

1. iNotePad -
No longer for sale.
name: free version
code: 0057968178

2. DevonThink Pro / and / DevonThink Pro Office. -

Both apps can freely import .txt .rtf .rtfd .pdf. and much more. You can drop 20 files at once and they get copied over. I have made a simple txt editor in Xcode myself that can import .txt, .rtf and .rtfd files. So simple. This is why a lot of us are just outraged that OutLine can not get it together and include basic Mac fundamentals. I mean we have been asking for such a simple process from as for back as 2014.

Thank you so much for the references!

I will forward the links to our manager and we will discuss this feature later on.

What about simplicity, it can become much more complicated once you're trying to build in some simple function to complex system.
At the moment we're working on some code renewal and once we finish, all the simplest things can become a little bit simpler.
