Why can not support notebook which in network filesystem?

Jeffery Mar 20, 2016 07:49PM PDT

It is the perfect notebook in OSX if it can support network filesystem (e.g. samba).
Our team using ONENOTE in windows share disk for weekly report, but the version in MAC cannot support local notebook as you know. So I really need the outline support notebook opening in samba FS.
Please make it better for supporting network FS. I really like outline+. :-)
We will pay for it if it can support network FS.

PS: Of cause it's the best if the version of IPAD and MAC both can support samba. :-)

Hi Jeffery,

Thank you for sharing your feedback and suggestions! I've passed your comments to the team and this is actually an interesting topic for us to consider.

In fact, even though Outline doesn't officially support working with network filesystems, you might still be able to open notebooks from you team's shared disk. We will email you directly with some questions about your scenario.

I've found that as long as i can navigate to the shared folder in Finder i can open & edit Onenote files on a shared drive. What i do is make a shortcut in Finder (by dragging the shared folder to the shortcut area) then open that folder in Outline.

The only issues i have with that is that whenever my network connection goes down I can't see any of the contents of the Onenote in Outline. I suppose this makes sense, but it would be nice if Outline handled keeping a "local cached" version of the files and handled re-syncing when the network connection becomes available again.

Hi Justin,

Thank you for reaching out!

We've had this question before and we thought about enabling the feature of making the temporary copies of such notebooks as well.

Let me check with the team and I will get back to you with the information on when this thing will be implemented.

And here is an update on Outline improvements!

We've released the special feature for network drive located notebooks in the latest 3.11 version.

Now such notebooks will stay in Outline even when the connection to the drive is lost.
Upon reconnecting to the initial location, all the edits made while "offline" will get moved to the original copy of the notebook.

Feel free to test the new feature will 3.11 version of Outline.
And you're welcome to send your feedback to me here or directly at!

Hi there. Even that I´m running version 3.15.1 (39.151.500) on Mac OS 10.12 the above described feature is not working for me.

I have multiple OneNote files on our company share (smb://...) and can perfectly access them when I´m connected to the network. As soon as I have no internet connection the notebooks in Outline aren´t accessible anymore and no content or structure is shown.

Would you pls give some advise on how to get the offline functionality you have mentioned.

I have a shared onenote notebook on an SMB drive. The mount point sometimes changes the name (upper/lower case).
Can I update the remote address of a notebook? Or check what's the current remote address of a notebook?

When are the notebooks synced btw? Only on manually clicking the "sync" Button?

Thank you,
