Move or restore a Section

Normand Cloutier Dec 27, 2016 08:18AM PST

I am using the trial version of Outline. I love the program but I constantly have a bug since I am using it that would refrain me from buying the software.

I have created a local Notebook on my Mac in my Documents folder.

Path shown on my Notebook properties in Outline: /Users/normand/Documents/Outline/Notebooks

Each time I am trying to restore a Section from a back up or even just moving a Section from within the Notebook I have an error message like this one:

Remove operation not allowed for path: '/Users/normand/Library/Outline/StorageOne/Unfiled/1789.05.05 - États généraux [2016-12-26_12-41-13].outdoc'

What I don't understand is if I have created my Notebook in my Documents folder why Outline seems to think that it is located in my Library ?

Thanks

Hi Normand,

We apologise for inconvenience!

And do you have this error message with one particular section or all of the sections you're restoring?

We will try to recreate the situation.
We've thought maybe such strange behaviour appeared because the "é" letters in the section title.
Do you think you can try to rename the section > backup it and try to move from Unfiled notebook?
If we are right with the suggestion about the title, we will fix it.

I am trying to isolate the problem myself. It seems that I have this problem with all Sections that have names with french accents like é, è, ô and so on.

But will need to do more testing to be sure there is a direct correlation between the two.

I will try what you suggest.

Thanks

Normand,

Wanted to check on your progress.

Did you manage to test the scenario without french stressed letters?
Does the app work correctly this way?

If it does, I will ask the devs to include the fix ticket for this case to the next release plan.

Hi Alena,

To do things properly I uninstalled Outline from my Mac including everything under Library. There are a few things that I want to verify. step by step.

I will keep you in touch.

After the new install Outline is working just great. The problem did not reoccure. I intensively tested Outline all day and I am satisfied. Just bought my licence.

Alena,

Haven't used Outline for a while and unfortunately problem described in this thread reappeared. But I found a way to fix it. Seems that the problem occurs when a Note Section Groups name has french accents (in my case the letter é as the section group name was Périodes)

Suddenly all notes under that section group where gone. My Notebooks are under my /user/Documents/Outline/Notebooks folder.

Couldn't move or delete my notes under that section group anymore as trying to do always ended up with an error message.

Surpringly Notes that where under Section Group Périodes where gone but after some search I found them under the folder /user/Library/Outline/Unfiled.

I then deleted the Section Group "Périodes" and created a new with the same name but without the accent "Periodes" I then closed Outline, open Finder thundered my Notes from folder user/Library/Outline/Unfiled to /user/Documents/Outline/Notebooks/Periodes/ and open Outline again.

All my Notes where there and Outline is stable again and doesn't gives me any problems.

Seems that Outline has a problem when Section Group names have non-english letters. In my case french letters with accents.

Thanks

Hi Normand,

We apologise for Outline doing this!

Seems there are some difficulties with the app working with file system.
I've forwarded your scenario to the devs, we will try to recreate it and fix.

The most strange thing is with sections moving from section group in your notebook to Unfiled.
It looks like the section group's folder disappeared for some reason and once the sections were opened in Outline they get move to Unfiled (it's the folder for the sections opened separately).

I will write to you once there are any news from the devs.

Normand,

Wanted to bring you the news on your situation:

We've tested this scenario on renaming section groups and got to conclusion that this bug is not connected to some particular letters.
There are some error in renaming mechanism and we're fixing it now.

Please write to me if you meet any new examples of strange behaviour, I will be able to give them to the devs too.
