Paste as Plain Text adds extra characters

Russel C May 09, 2017 04:21PM PDT

I am copying and pasting data from a PDF file, however whenever I paste it it seems Outline adds extra data. If I paste as plain text into Outline it pads it with a bang ("!") and several extra blank lines before and after the copied text.

If I paste this into any other app the only formatting is font settings and the line of text I am trying to copy...if I do this into Outline it carries a lot more formatting and extra lines of null space. I have tried this with Microsoft Word, Visual Code Studio, and Pages and the extra characters only show up in Outline.

This is as bad as MS apps that lack the ability to paste plain text, I have to round trip this data through a plain text editor (e.g. vim, Visual Code Studio, Sublime Text, etc) and really makes Outline undesirable.

Hi Russel,

We apologise for this situation!

And did you try to paste this text to TextEdit?

You can send me one of the PDFs that behaves this way on pasting the text.
I will forward it to the devs and we will fix it.
You can write an email to support@outline.ws

Unfortunately most of the PDFs I am interacting with currently are covered under NDAs, however I am finding the same problem on some web sites such as this one: https://docs.minio.io/docs/multi-tenant-minio-deployment-guide

In this case it seems that the site has some style sheets that Safari respects (doesn't happen with Chrome) that causes any copy/paste to also include the URL of the page, however if I paste it as plain text into Outline you add a "!" before the text that I don't see elsewhere...other apps also ignore the URL data when pasting as plain text.

Russel,

Thank you for the link!

And that's the general HTML import difficulty we have.
I will include this link to our fix ticket.

And I tested pasting the content from it: the problem only occurs in Safari.
In Chrome for example the formatting is preserved in both simple paste and paste as plain modes.

And please write to me if you find any PDF you can share that behaves the same.
We're working now on some improvements for PDF import / export in Outline and could use the files that have any problems on copy / paste.
