auto bullet'ing when typing

Mukesh May 15, 2017 10:50AM PDT

hi:
If I start a line with'1. ' then Outline auto converts it into a numbered list which is awesome.

However if I do the same with '* ' then it doesn't auto-convert it into a bullet list. I have to manually select the bullet from tool bar.

Can you please look into it?

thanks,
mukesh

Hi Mukesh,

Thanks for reaching out!

Usually it works, more specifically this feature annoys me tremendously.
So I asked the devs and they suggested to try it in a new section > new page too.

If you have this difficulty with pasting the images from Safari in the same section, it's the section or page corruption.
Here is how you can fix this section:
- right-click the section in notebooks tree > Set Password;
- right-click again > Remove Password.

And out new repair tool:
- press ALT > right-click this section tab > Repair Section.

Please write to me if it helps!

Hi Alena:

Sorry... did you type response to some other Q here? Somehow response doesn't match the question :).

In any case, the copy paste issue was resolved as other thread.

Bullets however are still not working.... numbering works fine

thanks,
mukesh

Mukesh,

No, I believe I replied to your comment about bullets that don't get generated automatically.

The devs ask if you could send us the screenshots of your Keyboard settings.
"Text" and "Shortcuts > Keyboard" windows.

And do you use English localisation in Outline?
This problem can be connected to some keyboard / language input settings on your Mac.

hi Alena:

you mentioned "If you have this difficulty with pasting the images from Safari in the same section, it's the section or page corruption." and the discussion was about bullets... hence I thought maybe comment had typo or something.

in any case, let me know if I should paste the pics someplace specific. In the meantime, Keyboard → Shortcut
- Set to all defaults
- Only check boxes are: Move focus to next window, Move focus to window drawer, Move focus to status menus ... all other are UNCHECKED

Keyboard → Text has following settings:

- CHEKCED: Correct Spelling Auto
- Spelling Drop Down: Automatic by language
- CHECKED: Use Smart Quotes and Dashes

Thanks,
Mukesh

Mukesh,

Thank you for information!

Apparently all the settings look fine.
I think maybe reinstalling the app or trying the cleaner tool can help.
But if they don't help too, I'm not sure what else there is to check.

Here is an article about cleaning tool:

hi Alena:

I didn't try reinstalling the app, but I did run the cleaner tool. But to no avail.

Pressing '*<space>" still only keeps '*' and doesn't turn it into bullet.

I even tried in a new page in existing notebook of type OneNote.
Then I created a new notebook of type outline and tried there...

Should I create a video and send it?

Mukesh,

Oh, I got it!
Is it asterisk you're typing?

In Outline we use "-<space>" for bullets.
It's hyphen, could you please try it (it's the key next to 0)?

Hi:

Yes '-' works fine (the key next to '0'..thanks for the education :-))

In any case, I would have thought that we would use '*' like any other editor... it would have been more intuitive.

Just curious... why did we chose hyphen instead of Asterisk??

Best,
Kats

Mukesh,

I'm glad it works!

And I'm not sure why this symbol particularly.
However I do remember some programs on Windows doing the same.
