Re-ordering Notebooks and Sections

Aylwin Dec 29, 2013 01:48AM PST

With Outline 2.0 for Mac, I've noticed that I can easily re-order pages simply by clicking and dragging. However, the same same doesn't seem to be possible for Notebooks and Sections.

To re-order my Notebooks, I need to close them and open them in the order that I wish. For Sections, I don't see any workaround.

Is it possible to re-order Sections? If not, can this please be added in the next release? At least for me, this is an important feature that I need for organizing my Notebooks.

Hello Aylwin,

currently you can drag and drop pages to reorder them and change their indentation level.
To reorder sections you need to cut a section and paste it to another location.
Notebooks cannot be reordered.

We will consider improvements regarding reordering sections and notebooks for our future updates.

Stay tuned!

I want to support this request. This is an important criterion to organize the notes.

I third this request. I want to be able to order my sections in the order I wish and not have them reordered alphabetically every time I reopen the program. It would also be helpful to reorder them by a simple click, drag and drop. Thanks!

Yes! I also think that the ability to organize how your notebooks are arrange is a necessary facet! Please, please make it possible. Thanks!

I also support ability to drag and drop sections to order then, but also to move them into newly created section groups.

Hi Brent,

Thank you for this request! As I answered on this same request sent from your e-mail, we have added this function into the version 3.0.

Please look forward to it.

I don't see the ability to reorder notebooks in v3.4.1.
I'd really like to see this feature.

How is reordering notebooks not a feature? I was thinking about buying this program, but at over $50 AUD, how is something like this not included?

In Outline for Mac, you can drag-and-drop sections to reorder them. In Outline for iPad, you can cut and paste sections to change their order.

I'm afraid it's still not possible to change notebook order in the navigation tree. I've recorded your vote for it.

I agree about being able to move the order of the notebooks. This is a very important thing to be able to do. I really hope that it is included in the next update.

Thanks for reaching out.

I'm afraid this option to re-organize notebooks is not in the next update, but we do have it in our plans to add this option in the future.

In the meantime, one workaround I can suggest is setting your notebook's location to one of the supported clouds (Dropbox, Box, iCloud, OneDrive), then closing the notebook in Outline and then re-opening it in Outline. The most recently opened or created notebooks appear at the bottom of the list, so you can try this workaround for moving notebooks to the end of the list.

We apologize for the inconvenience and for the delay in adding the ability to re-order notebooks.

Adding my voice to the comments on this ... please allow re-ordering of notebooks in the interface. Among other things, I'd like to keep the User Guide in there but would prefer it to not be the first thing on the list!

Hi Alex,

Thanks for reaching out!

And this feature is already implemented: it's available in the latest 3.10.1 version on Mac and since 3.9 version on iPad.
You'll find it when right-clicking / double-tapping on the notebook's cover.

Do you see it?

Alena - found it, and that worked - appreciate being able to re-order notebooks, thanks for pointing it out!

I'm currently starting with the trial version... an am a bit surprise it's not possible to move up / down sections and section groups... it's a very negative point and it feels like I need to know the structures of my notes before I start a note book, which is not possible. Too bad!

Hi Bruno,

Thanks for reaching out!

And we have this restriction set only for section groups.
You can move the sections themselves easily with drag&drop or cut&paste.
Did you try it?

Not being able to rearrange section groups is a major constraint. Have you plans for fixing it soon?

Otherwise I will have to find another program - and I am out the money I just spent.

Hi Donald,

Thanks for reaching out!

And we have this feature in our plans.
However there are no any precise dates for its release.

Have you tried the workaround with renaming the section group folders?
At the moment they get arranged alphabetically so you can use number prefixes to number the folders in the order you want.

Please write to me if you need more information on how to rename the folders.

Hello all,

Although I prefer my Notebooks and Section Groups to be ordered alphabetically, I can understand the need to reorder this any way you want. Therefore I would like to add my vote for adding this feature.

Came here because a newly added Section Group (starting with an 'A') was added to the bottom of my notebook, so not alphabetically. Since I could not drag or order it, I assumed it was going to stay at the bottom.
Closing and restarting Outline put it in alphabetical order. Not a deal-breaker, but it would've saved me some time if the reordering took place without having to restart Outline.

Apart from that, pretty satisfied with the tool!

With regards,
