Edited One Note document did not save!

Miranda Kemp Feb 15, 2014 07:32PM PST

I have used One Note extensively on Windows. I use it to plan and coordinate weddings and events for my business. I purchased Outline for Mac from the Mac AppStore and opened a One Note notebook that I had started. It opened fine, and I spent a day with a client taking notes on their upcoming wedding. To my horror, when I went back into Outline to put more information in, all of my client notes were missing! I have lost a day's work, time / money, and, most importantly, I have to arrange another meeting with my client to go over all of the information again, which consumes their time as well! And it does not reflect well on my reputation.

I would like to know how to resolve this immediately. Is there a way to retrieve this information?

I am quite frustrated.

Hello Miranda,
thanks for contacting us and letting us know about this issue.
I'm sorry it happened to you.

May I ask you, where is your notebook saved? Is it saved in a local folder on your Mac or on a sharing app (Box, Dropbox or SkyDrive)?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

I have also observed this behavior from my Mac. I have lost countless data with this application and the most recent is due to this apparent save that wasn't saved.

I do have this saved on my "Box" folder.

were you able to recover your notes from Box?

This is happening to me as well! I've been taking school notes in One Note for three years and I've recently changed to a Mac computer and am now using Outline. The changes I make in the One Note notebooks aren't saved! If I can't make changes in my existing notes I have absolutely no use for a notebook.

What can I do?

I'm sorry it happens to you.

Do you use the latest version 2.1?
Are your notebooks stored locally or on SkyDrive?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

I have been using Outline for about two months now after making the switch from Windows to a Mac, and I have come to the conclusion that it is just plain buggy. I have lost data on many occasions (sometimes a paragraph of notes taken in a previous session mysteriously disappear although I have only been appending at the end). I am also having the text cursor go all funny on me. So when I insert or delete text, the insertion or deletion happens not where the cursor is, but a few places away. Drives me crazy. I really like the interface and look of the application, but this is the first time I have had to deal with plain buggy software on a Mac.

I spent 3 hours writing notes the night before my midterm, just to find that my notes did not save. I'm not sure what the problem is, but I definitely expected better from Microsoft.

I'm finding the same thing! Current version 3.2.
This didn't happen to me in earlier versions.

How long does it take for Outline to write to local OneNote files?
Is there a way to force a save?

To force sync on Mac press CMD+S.
Normally changes are saved every 3 seconds.

May I ask you, do only the latest changes not save? I mean a few words, or larger amounts of text?

Upwards of a full paragraph doesn't save at times. I'm unable to recreate the issue on demand. It just seems to happen now and again.

FYI, the notebook is password protected. But since I had been typing in it there shouldn't be a problem, right?

It's curious that File/Save isn't listed in the menu, but yet the standard keyboard shortcut works.

Val, I've made the update and it seems like there are big changes under the hood in 3.3. :) I'll let you know if this problem persists. If I don't respond to this thread then you'll know that the issue is resolved. :)

Using OneNote online and this issue is happening to me. Entire day's work lost. Is there a process to recover lost work?

Hi Brenda,

We apologise for this situation!

Did you notice the notes missing when using OneNote Online?
Did you have a chance to check if the edits are still there in Outline?

If you have the notes in Outline but nothing can be seen in OneNote, there must be some sync errors.
You can copy the sections to some local notebook > close this OneDrive located notebook in Outline > re-open it > paste the sections back and sync.

In case the notes got re-written and you don't have them in both OneNote and Outline, please check the backups.
In Mac Outline it's Outline > Preferences > Backups > Show Backup Files > select the latest file > Restore.
In iOS it's Settings > Backups > Restore From Backup.

Please write to me if it helps!

Hi, I worked for several days making notes for an exam on an existing notebook, and they seem to have vanished. Not in backups, deleted notes etc. Is there anything I can do to recover them?
