Offline use / cache size

Gene Apr 19, 2014 11:24AM PDT

Can someone please explain to me how the caching for offline use works.

When I open and sync a OneNote file, does it go into a temp cache (which may be cleaned automatically later) ? In this case, I can't rely on the data being available offline (although using Outline+ with Dropbox makes this an easy problem to solve).

Or, does it get stored on the device permanently ? If that's the case, the data is always available offline, which is a plus, but the negative is that the storage space is wasted on the records I rarely if ever need offline.

Ideally, there should be some kind of "favorite notebook" or "favorite page" feature that controls what is available offline and what is only cached temporarily.

Hello Gene,

Thank you for your questions!

For now all Outline files is always stored locally, no matter if it is shared ti Dropbox or not. There is no function of a temp cache, and notebooks are always accessible offline

But the idea you expressed looks interesting! So we`ll think it over!

Please feel free to get in touch, if there is anything you`d like to comment on or discuss.

My reason for trying out Outline was that the OneNote offline cache was bloated, and it would not accept symbolic links to an external HDD.

Is there any way of changing the default location of offline cache or, alternatively, would Outline accept symbolic links to the offline cache?

Where is the offline cache located?

Hello Magnus,

Outline doesn't support symbolic links. As regards offline cache location, you can't change the default location for it because this may cause performance errors.

Thank you.

Thanks Vicky,

That's a disappointing but expected answer.

Nevertheless, I would like to know the location of the offline cache, in order to see if Outline's offline cache is less bloated than OneNote's - otherwise there is little help in switching to the former.

Hello Magnus,

Then, please clarify where did you buy Outline - on the Mac App Store or on our site because cache location depends on version.

Thank you.

Aha, I see.

I have the App Store version 3.5.1.

OneNote's offline cache is actually DOUBLE the combined size of the attachments I have in notebooks, so my hope is that Outline does not do the same - I wonder if this is OneNote's OCR data or something else?

Thanks again,

Hello Magnus,

Notebooks' offline data is located here: Users/{user_name}/Library/Containers/com.gorillized.outlinemac/Data/Library/Outline/StorageOne
Additional cache of errors, sync, attachments is here: /Users/{user_name}/Library/Containers/com.gorillized.outlinemac/Data/Library/Caches/com.gorillized.outlinemac

Please note - We recommend do not change, move or delete any files in these locations as it may cause errors!

Hope it helps.

Thank you.

Thank you very much!

Unfortunately it seems that Outline isn't able to fix OneNote's problem - that a notebook is always roughly twice the size of the files contained in it (in this case JPEGs).

Not Outline's problem, then, but it still makes Outline of little help to me, unfortunately.

Thanks again,

Hi Magnus,

This problem might be caused by OneNote notebooks format.

You can try changing the format of your notebooks to Outline's.
In our format we have the separate attachment folder so the attached files doesn't create extra information in the section files itself.
